John Mortensen aka JAM

John “JAM” Mortensen currently employed by The Roost Bait and Tackle in Hatteras, North Carolina where he is a Custom Fishing Rod Builder, with over 10 years experience Building Custom Fishing Rods for all applications. The Roost is located inside of Teach’s Lair Marina, which is one of the premier Marina’s in the world. JAM is currently on the Pro Staff for DAIWA, and Aqua-Bound Paddles.

jamJAM started KAYAK Fishing in 2002, in an area commonly known as The Grave Yard of the Atlantic. He spent the first 4 years of his Kayak fishing, right off of Cape Point, in Buxton North Carolina. After 4 years of Gear Destruction on Diamond Shoals, he switched gears to explore what the backwaters of Hatteras Island had to offer, where he spends about 80 percent of his time.


He is currently a Licensed North Carolina Kayak Fishing Guide, who specializes in Red Drum and Speckled Trout.

JAM also has a Little Fishing spot on the Web Called “JAM’S Adventures” www.fishmilitia.com/jam

JAM has fished all of his life, from the Hudson River in New York, where he grew up as a boy, to Offshore Sport Fishing out of Hatteras North Carolina and Hawaii. He has received North Carolina Fishing Citations for several different Species, including over a hundred Red Drum, several Speckle Trout, a Sheep’s Head and a Blue Marlin.

He has been featured in several articles about Kayak fishing, including The Sportsman, Carolina Sports Man, and Saltwater Sports Man magazines in the past several years.

JAM is a member of Hatteras Island Fishing Militia, Cape Hatteras Anglers Club, and the Outer Banks Preservation Association.
His Fishing Accomplishments include 2005 Cape Hatteras Anglers Club, Largest Red Drum Hatteras Island and 2011 Cape Hatteras Anglers Club, Largest Speckle Trout Hatteras Island. One of his main goals was achieved in 2008, when he caught his First Blue Marlin. His next Goal is a North Carolina Tarpon, or any Bill Fish from the YAK.
